Overview

Born in Odesa, Ukraine; parents were Soviet "refuseniks." Career arc: 9 years at Webmetrics/NeuStar → founded Localmind → 7 years at Airbnb as an early PM → newsletter/podcast empire. The empire is built almost entirely solo: no full-time employees, ~10 contractors.

Operating Principles

  • Quality as the only variable. Spends 10–100 hours per newsletter; reviews each piece 50 times before publishing. The output volume (~25 pieces/month) is sustained by treating quality as non-negotiable, then optimizing everything else around it.
  • Radical saying-no. Declines roughly 99.9% of the ~200 weekly inbound requests. The newsletter exists because the calendar is mostly empty.
  • No full-time employees, ever. ~10 contractors at most. Avoids the management overhead and operational drag of a real company.
  • Product Pass — the bundle play. Launched a paid bundle of 20+ product tools for subscribers; calls it "the smartest thing I've ever done." Subscription-as-distribution rather than subscription-as-product.

AI in His Workflow

Uses LLMs heavily for podcast prep — generates questions in the styles of Charlie Rose, Terry Gross, and Sean Evans, then picks the strongest ones. Treats AI as an interviewer-style amplifier, not a writer.

Studio Notes to Self

Post-it style reminders he keeps visible: "Push back more," "Difficult parts / stories," "More IC folks." Direct evidence of the iterative quality loop applied to his own podcast performance.
